Florida Windshield Insurance: What the $0 Deductible Rule Actually Means
Florida law can remove the deductible for covered windshield damage under qualifying comprehensive or combined additional coverage. It does not make every windshield replacement automatically free.
Florida Statute 627.7288
Florida Statute 627.7288 states that deductible provisions do not apply to windshield damage under motor vehicle policies delivered or issued in Florida by an authorized insurer when the policy provides comprehensive coverage or combined additional coverage.
The key point is coverage: liability-only or PIP coverage by itself is not the same as comprehensive coverage. The insurance carrier determines whether the specific damage and policy qualify.
What to confirm with your insurer
- Whether comprehensive coverage is active.
- Whether the windshield damage is a covered loss.
- What claim authorization is required before replacement.
- Whether calibration or related services are covered.
Important 2023+ rule
Florida also prohibits assignment of post-loss motor vehicle glass benefits for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2023. Customers should communicate directly with their insurer about claim benefits and authorization.
